Shenanigans Rally 2010 (Detroit --> TOTD), May 21st - 23rd

Okay, so I've wanted to plan a "rally" type deal where we can gather up some people and just have fun. No $10,000+ buy-in, no exotic requirement, and no cross-country bullshit. Sure we may not be swagged-out and stickered-up, but that's no problem with me.

Disclaimer: This is NOT a RACE, all drivers are responsible for the consequences of their actions as well as those of guests riding in the vehicle. All drivers must have valid license/plates/insurance on their own vehicle. Everyone must obey local laws/rules/regulations at all times. Anyone that intends to consume alcohol on the trip should be of legal drinking age, and shall not operate a vehicle while under the influence.

What is it?:

The first-annual Shenanigans Rally is something I'd like to try and see if it catches on. My inspiration was other "well-known" rallies, such as the Players Run, Joyride, GoldRush, Gumball and so on, so on. But I asked myself, "Why do all the richer guys get to have all the fun?", why can't I participate if I don't own an exotic car? Why do I have to spend anywhere between $5,000 to $75,000 just to enter a rally? What if I just want to do something short but incredibly fun? And so the idea was born, why don't I just make my own?

Well here it is guys, I hope you decide to come out and make it a success. Like I said, all are welcome, but I'd like to get at least a couple higher-end cars too.


Venue:

We will be meeting in the Metro Detroit area and head to the Tail of the Dragon, leaving Friday morning (May 14th). The meeting location and route will be discussed at a later date, and will not be publicly posted. This is the rally part of the weekend, and shenanigans are more than welcome on the trip down.

Upon arrival, we will check into the cabin(s) at Fontana Village, and possibly grab some local food or fire up a grill. You can get accustomed to the local area and tear up the Dragon at your discretion during this time. If you choose to drink at this time, make sure you do not drive the rest of the evening.

Saturday morning (May 15th), afternoon, and evening, we are free to have a little fun driving the Dragon, and the Cherohala Skyway. Same as the previous evening, there will be no drinking and driving whatsoever.

Sunday morning (May 16th) we will be leaving and returning to Michigan in rally fashion. Once again, shenanigans will ensue.

Keep in mind, spots on this trip will be limited, so start planning now!


What will I need?:

* Reliable car or truck
* Functional spare tire
* Money (bring cash, don't rely on plastic)
* FRS/GMRS Two-way radio (aka those little Cobra walkie-talkies)
* Blanket and Pillow
* Personal toiletries (enough for two nights)
* Clothes
* Cell phone (and charger)
* Bug spray (deep woods shit, the bugs down there are crazy)
* Any medication you may need
* Google Maps printout of route

Optional stuff to bring:

* Radar detector
* GPS device
* CB radio
* Camera(s) and Camcorder(s)
* Tools
* Flashlight
* 12V tire air compressor
* Sunglasses
* Megaphone
* Paint markers (makes for great fun)
* Unopened Alcohol (not in passenger compartment)
* Any other goofy shit that you may desire


How much will it cost?:

The rally is 100% free to enter, however, you NEED to "register" in this thread if you're interested. Please don't act interested if you're not going to have the means to participate in 5 months.

The rally portion (round trip) is around 1100 miles. Factor in "spirited" driving into calculating your fuel cost. Add at least one tank driving the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway (if you want to). Keep in mind, gas prices are above average in the mountains.

Lodging is fairly cheap at Fontana. At $139/night for the Laurel Cabin, it can be split-up between four people at $35/person/night if everyone wants a bed, but would be even cheaper if people are willing to sleep on the couch or floor.

Food is going to have to be calculated on your own, depending on your preferences. For the rally portion, we can decide if we want to hit any sit-down restaurants or stick with fast-food options.

Realistically, I would recommend setting aside AT LEAST $400-500 for this trip if you want to have fun. Also keep in mind if something were to go wrong, would you have enough cash to cover it?

Is there any kind of logo for this yet? If not I suggest Johnny Chimpo from SuperTroopers! Every time I hear shenanigans I think of that seen from super troopers. "Evil shenanigans!"
